App Design
Regimen is the result of my love for skincare! It is an app designed to guide you on your journey to a more confident you by analyzing and optimizing your skincare routine.
🤷🏻♀️ Why is a skincare app needed?
Serums? Essence? Ampole? Niacinamide? Retinol? AHA? BHA? PHA?
With so many different products and endless ingredients, building a skincare routine can be overwhelming, confusing, and sometimes paralyzing.
🏁 Regimen Goal
• Help users analyze and optimize their skincare routine
• Record the effectiveness of their routine by documenting their skin progress.
Deliverable: App Design
Role: Product Designer, UX Researcher
Tools: Figma
🤝 Understanding User Skincare Concerns
Unfortunately, no magic product will grant everyone great skin. People need to go through trial and error and experiment with products to find what works best for them.
Soon after starting their skincare journey, the frustration begins to set in.
👷🏻♀️ Breaking Down the Problem
1) There is an overwhelming wealth of information
There are so many products on the market and many different ingredients. Skincare consumers are bombarded with information and many get overwhelmed and confused about what is best for their skin.
2) People are unaware of how to mix and match active Ingredients
Niacinamide? Retinol? AHA? BHA? PHA?
Users do not understand how to combine or separate active ingredients. Many I interviewed were unaware that this was something they needed to consider.
3) People are bad at taking progress photos
With so many products on the market, consumers buy into the marketing claims but the products used may not be working for their skin.
👩🏻🔧 How can we help?
1) Make it easy for users to track and analyze their skincare routine
I wanted to provide users with an easy method of evaluating their existing skincare routine. With Regimen, users can upload their skincare products onto the app, where their routine will be evaluated as a whole.
1.a) Users have two methods of adding products to the app
manually searching by name
or by scanning the product barcode.
1.b) The product details will be pulled up and users can add it to their regimen.
1.c) Once added users can then reference their skincare product information and notes for future reference.
They can view and edit which routine the product falls under.
They can note when the open and used by dates are and any notes they may have about the product.
Additionally, they will have a record of the product details that may be lost once the box is thrown away.
1.d) Ingredients will be analyzed to ensure there are no conflicting active ingredients.
Users can also add products before they purchase. That way they can see if the new product will fit in with their current skincare routine.
2) Provide a space for users to document their skin status
Research Insights
Skincare is a journey that takes time. During interviews, many users said they would just make a mental note of how their skin was doing.
Why does it matter?
By keeping a skin journal users will be able to:
Review the condition of their skin and document how the products they are using are contributing.
They may also discover how other factors such as sleep, exercise, and diet affect their skin.
Lastly, users will be able to document if any irritation is caused by new products added to their routine.
👩🏻💻 Usability Testing Results
I conducted 7 usability tests with a prototype built on Figma. Responses from the usability testing were positive!…for the most part
The Good
Participants were very excited about Regimen!
Users were able to navigate the app and understood how to add a product to their regimen without assistance
They loved that they could add their products easily with a barcode scan
The Pain Points
When adding a journal entry, users were unsure why they needed to select the skincare items used. Indicating the feature was unnecessary.
Users were unsure how to add a photo to their journal entry. They were unable to find the button to add a photo on the top right corner.
🤔 Reflections
When I first started designing, I aimed to cover every aspect of building a skincare routine, including social features for users to connect with a community, as many interviewees mentioned purchasing products through recommendations.
However, this made the app overwhelming, defeating the goal of simplifying skincare. I narrowed the focus to skincare regimen analysis and documentation, but in hindsight, it would have been better to prioritize the regimen aspect before adding extra features.
This experience taught me that less is more—both in design and skincare.
